Fencing and Renaissance Weapons

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The Renaissance period spanned the 14th to the 17th century. Weapons from that era included swords, daggers, and other types of blades. Renaissance weapons were different from weapons in past eras as they became more of a fashion statement. Due to the increasing popularity of fencing, renaissance swords and daggers became a must have item.

As a result of fencing’s popularity, renaissance swords were at first called “costume swords.” Once the trendy weapons were adopted by the French and spread throughout Europe, the term “rapier” became the official name for this new kind of civilian sword. As people became more skilled in the art of fencing, a new fad surfaced called dueling. Dueling became the standard when trying to resolve a dispute between two persons. The rapier was the most common sword used in a duel but other renaissance weapons and swords could be made available.

Webpage Mockups

Monday, August 17th, 2009

When ever I have a new web design project I am having done, I like to get a few web page mockups created from different designers.  This allows me to choose a design from a few different artists, instead of just taking what one person thinks up.  Often for a little as $50 you can have a designer give you an example of how they see your website looking.  When high end project can run in the tens of thousands of dollars spending a $1000 or so to have a number of designers show you there ideas is money well spent.  It’s a lot easier to get where you want to be when you start from something you already love rather then trying to make something you think is ok, great!

Battle Over Online Music Preferences

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

We’re having an ongoing battle over music in the house. My online music preferences lean toward Jazz, Standards, Showtunes and Classics, while Marcie tends to like 80s music and some of the newer Indie stuff. We usually have music streaming over the home theater system, and since it accesses both of our computers over WiFi, it’s easy to switch using the TiVo remote.

I think I liked it better back when I could load up 5 CDs into the disc changer and she’s have to deal with changing all of them in order to change the music. Now it’s just a matter of swapping playlists with the remote.

If I have to listen to one more John Mayer song I’ll croak.

Underappreciated Tattoo Designs Deserve Attention

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

The passion and the drive that goes into creating tattoo designs is something that goes under appreciated by most I would guess.  The fact that tattoos are seen as a sign of personal expression and literally, living art, seems to go unnoticed by many.  But that is what makes it so special and unique.  It is all about showing off something personal in a way that is unlike anything else.  Being creative not just with your mind and what you can do, but expressing it through the art of the body and allowing it to speak for you is what it’s all about.

Why is violin hard to play

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

When you pluck a note on a guitar string, there isn’t very much that can go wrong. You may not play the right note at the right time, of course, but a single note will always come out at the expected pitch, and sounding reasonably musical. When a beginner tries to play a violin, things are much more difficult. When a bow is drawn across a string, the result might be a musical note at the desired pitch, but on the other hand it might be an undesirable whistle, screech or graunch. This difference stems from a fundamental distinction between the physics of plucked and bowed strings. Mastering the violin is a complex job that requires years of intensive training. The violinist must be able to transmit his feelings to the listener while feeling perfectly at ease with the instrument, be it in the accuracy of each note as in the use of the numerous sound capacities of the violin.

Three Generations of One Family Enjoy Crafting

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Making crafts seems to be an inherited talent in our family.  My mother taught me how to knit when I was very young and I became interested in other types of needlework as well as painting.  I passed on my love of crafting to my daughter. She began doing stamped cross-stitch samplers at the age of five or six and in a few years graduated to the more difficult counted cross-stitch.  Now I have the pleasure of teaching my granddaughter about tole painting and knitting.  She has taught me about some new types of crafts.  Sculpting with polymer clay is something she enjoys doing and I have made a few figures with her help.  I am so grateful the women in our family have this shared interest in crafting.

B5 is a Good Start…

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

The B5 power chord is one of the best beginner guitar chords. Ready to expand your power chord set? That is great because today we’ll work on the B5 power chord. You’ll play both the A and D strings while leaving out the rest. On the A string you’ll press down on the first fret while on the D string you’ll press down on the third fret. Use your first finger for the A string and the third finger for the D string. This shape forms the basics for the power chords that follow. Search online for Rock and Roll or Classic Rock songs that use the B5 power chord and work on your skills.
