A patent is essentially a document that gives exclusive rights to the owner and creator of the product. This is very important because this patent is a legal document that prevents anyone else from making, selling or profiting from the product without the consent of the owner. A typical patent lasts for twenty years from the filing date. It will then either expire or it can be renewed.
